# ISAs and personal savings

An ISA lets your savings grow free of income tax and capital gains tax. We help you choose the right type of ISA and, for stocks and shares ISAs, the right funds for your goals and attitude to risk.

- **ISA allowance:** £20,000 per tax year (2026/27)
- **Junior ISA allowance:** £9,000 per tax year
- **Types:** Cash ISA, stocks and shares ISA, Junior ISA

## How do ISAs work?

Each tax year you can put up to £20,000 into ISAs. You can split it between cash and stocks and shares however you like, and pay in a lump sum, regular amounts or both. You can transfer savings from previous years between cash and stocks and shares ISAs.

## Which type of ISA is right for me?

### Cash ISA

Offered mostly by banks and building societies. Your capital is usually secure, but rates vary a lot between providers. Some are fixed rate, some variable.

### Stocks and shares ISA

Invested in funds such as equities, fixed interest and property. There are thousands to choose from. We help you pick funds that match the risk you are comfortable with.

### Junior ISA

For children under 18 without a Child Trust Fund. Family and friends can pay in up to £9,000 a year. The child can access the money at 18.

## ISAs and personal savings: your questions answered

### How much can I put in an ISA this year?

Up to £20,000 in the 2026/27 tax year, across all your ISAs combined. A Junior ISA has a separate £9,000 limit.

### Is a stocks and shares ISA risky?

The value can go down as well as up, so it suits money you can leave invested for at least five years. We match the funds to how much risk you are comfortable with.

### Can I move my old ISAs?

Yes. You can transfer ISAs from previous years between providers and between cash and stocks and shares without losing the tax benefits, as long as you use the transfer process.

The value of investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount invested.

Property funds can sometimes be not readily realisable, so you may not be able to sell or cash in this investment when you want to.
